UPDATE FROM THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER OF THE AAPM
At the risk of spamming you further about COVID-19, the SCC would like to update you on the status of our spring event. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that COVID-19 is now officially a pandemic, identified in 114 countries. As of March 15, there are 1629 cases in the United States of which 335 cases are in California.

To protect public health and slow the rate of transmission of COVID-19, the California Department of Public Health recommends certain gatherings should be postponed or canceled across the state of California for at least the remainder of the month of March - and potentially longer.

In response, the AAPM is canceling national meetings and many local chapters are canceling or postponing spring meetings. As our meeting is local, with typical attendance less than 40 individuals, and scheduled for the beginning of May, we are tentatively still on. However, due to the evolving situation the event may have to be postponed or canceled. While many of us do not necessarily have direct patient contact, the populations we serve are vulnerable. In addition, many universities are imposing domestic travel bans. As you have seen in the media, this is a very fluid situation with updates coming in on a daily basis. We will continue to provide updates as needed; we hope to give you 2 weeks advance notice of a date change or cancelation of the on-site meeting if at all possible.

In the meantime, the Norm Baily Award submissions are still open, the April 10th deadline still stands, and the submissions will be judged ahead of time with the top entries in each category announced on May 5 -- in the event we cancel the meeting, we will announce the winners via email. We still have awards to give out regardless of global pandemic, so please take advantage of it! With regards to the MedPhys SLAM, AAPM has not yet made a statement either way on whether it is still happening at the annual meeting this year; if you are still interested please let us know your intentions by April 10th as well, and we will update you on plans for that as we get closer to May 5th. Please send your submissions to both competitions to stevegoetsch@sdgkc.com.

If you have any comments, suggestions, or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to any, or all, of us.
